White Night 2017

White Night Melbourne was held again in 2017.  The public event took place overnight on Saturday 18th February.  Featuring light and projection displays, musicians, dancers, and other entertainers.  The family friendly event stretched from the National Gallery on St Kilda Road, through the city to the Exhibition Building in the Carlton Gardens.

Once again White Night drew a large crowd into Melbourne, including many photographers.  I was joined this year by my 16 year old niece, photography student, Megan.  By the time we headed home at around 5AM, we had walked many kilometres and taken thousands of photos.

It’s taken me a couple of weeks to go through my White Night photos.  (I know that’s a couple of weeks too long when I’m supposed to be publishing this photography web-site, but it’s better to be late than never getting your work done.)

Below are a few of my favourite pics from the night.  You can check out more White Night photos in the gallery.

UPDATE 20 May 2017

I’ve finally gotten around to editing together the video footage I also took at White Night Melbourne.

Normally Vic Pics is a place for my photography, not video, so this film is on my personal YouTube channel.

Melbourne skyline from St Vincent’s Private

Due to a heavy schedule of family and work commitments, along with some medical issues, I haven’t managed to get out and about with the camera much recently.  However, while visiting my ill mother at St Vincent’s Private Hospital yesterday, I couldn’t help but admire the view of Melbourne she had from her room.  A quick snap with my iPhone, apply an Instagram filter, and voilà – a nice soft image of the Melbourne skyline, looking across Victoria Parade towards Macarthur Street.

There’s a few things I like about this photo.  Firstly, I somehow managed to fluke a big gap in traffic from all directions, it actually looks like a quiet Sunday morning, rather than a busy Saturday afternoon.  Secondly, the old fire station and tower looks amazing in the foreground.  It’s a building you hardly notice from the road, but from five stories up it looks amazing.  Finally, if you look close enough, Melbourne’s tallest building, the Eureka Tower, actually looks rather small, but appears closer than it actually is.

2016 White Night Melbourne Pics

I’ve shown you a few pictures from White Night Melbourne in the last three blog posts, with the promise of more when I’d finished reviewing and processing over 1000 photos taken over 8 hours of wondering around Melbourne on what was a beautiful night.

A trip to Sydney last week delayed my processing of those White Night photos, but they’re done now.  Whittled down to 159 photos, you can see them all in our White Night Gallery, or scroll down to see some of my favourite pics from the night.

I’m still working my way through over 1000 photos from last weekend’s White Night Melbourne, the dusk to dawn festival of lights, displays, music and dance. These photos were taken at Birrarung Marr.  As I process more photos from the night, they’re uploaded to the Vic Pics gallery, so keep checking the White Night page for more pictures.

I’ve added a few more photos to our White Night Gallery from last Saturday night / Sunday morning.  The latest photos were taken around Queen Victoria Gardens and Alexandra Gardens.  This shot features a light show projected onto a fountain in the middle of the Yarra River, with crowds enjoying the show from the Alexandra Gardens river bank.

Keep an eye on the Gallery, as we continue to process more pictures from last weekend’s White Night Melbourne 2016.

Last Saturday night (and early Sunday morning) was White Night Melbourne, “…a dusk ‘til dawn celebration of culture and creativity via lighting, exhibitions, street performances, film, music, dance and interactive events taking place in the streets and laneways, parklands, public spaces and cultural institutions of Melbourne” (quoted from their website).  I spent 8 hours through the night exploring our city and White Night between the National Gallery on St Kilda Road to the Royal Exhibition Buildings in Carlton.  During this time I managed to take over 1100 photographs and I will be processing the best shots over the next few days.

I will be posting more photos in future blog posts, but in the mean time you can check out our White Night Gallery, which will continue to grow as I process more photos from the night.
