It’s difficult to image that as recently as 1987, a major Melbourne railway line operated through what is now Southbank. The proof is the former Sandridge Rail Line Bridge, which has remained in place over the Yarra River while the areas surrounding it were extensively redeveloped.
This picture was taken from the Southbank Promenade. You can see the pedestrian walkway which has been added to the bridge, giving people easy access across the river towards Flinders Street Railway Station.
Further history of the area can be read in this Wikipedia entry.
